Yo babes, just to remind you

Band comp is just 4 months away. Please practise frequently at home.

Basic things to practise at home

[Everything to be practise at minimum of 120bpm]
-Semi Quavers.
-Rolls
-High level of strokes.
-Upstrokes. [which means that your sticks would go back up after you play instead of making sure that it stays down there.]
-Accents.
-Dynamics :must be able to control your volume.[eg: playing pp with high strokes]

Songs
-Memorise all your scores for your current assigned instruments.
-By the next practise you should be able to play without looking at your scores[otherwise told not to].
-Not forgetting all your music expressions[dynamics, strokes, articulation]. (remember we are'nt from a percussion group. We're from a band. Playing Good music is the key.)

Marching
-While practising[those stated above], mark-time as you play. In this way when we put music and formations together, everything will be much easier for you.
-Basic rules of marching: Rolling steps! Chins up, shoulders back, legs V-shape, Clench you fist[otherwise told not to][these are the basics, we're sick of saying them too] even when we're marching from a place to another or with instruments, they ought the be there still!!
-Dun forget all our formations after this long holiday[how many steps to take, where to turn]
-Please shout your timing. This is very important. You guys might think that your marching is already fantastic and theres no need to shout your timing, but please dun be complacent, the main objective of shouting your timing is so that everyone will march together and be uniform.[especially parts of formations where the band is widely spread across the field, you would'nt want the band other side of the field to be lagging]

Attitude
-Best behaviour and attitude expected for every practise
-Always remember what you've been taught and not forget them immediately during the next practise.[especially what Mr Sim taught us]
-Like what Cindy had told us, we can't afford to WASTE any more time. Make full use of the time we had in band to brush up on everything that you are weak in.
-Be alert and listen to instructions attentively.[Please do not ask us to repeat instructions to you again]
-Move FAST.
-Take initiatives
-So not ask silly questions

Sidenote: To those members who are more soft-spoken, being quiet is not a priviledge for you not to shout your timings or not respond accordingly. What we want to see is at least a minimum of efforts that you are trying to open your mouth and not just expecting us to give you priviledge just because you're soft-spoken. This will be very unfair to the other members. So please at least take some effort to talk to us with a volume that we can hear. We do not want to go near anyone of you close to your mouth just to listen to what you say or lip-read what you said. Please change for the better. :)

On the other note, please note that whatever instruments that you are currently playing are not confirm. We will switch instruments or reduce the number of percussionist on the field if needed. If there is any changes necessary, please try to accept it with a open mind and heart. Remember what Mr Daniel said before, it does'nt means that you're bad just because you're in auxilary. We are no longer the band that put members just for the sake of making sure that the number is right but instead, we would want to display the best players amongest.

Alright thats all i wanna say for band stuffs.

Please FINISH all your homeworks and dun give any of your teachers any problem! Ms Aza said that if theres complains about any one of us not doing well in our studies, she will not hesitate to take us out of band comp.
And remember, being in band is a priviledge! But not an excuse for you not doing your homework!

Over here i would like to wish everyone of you a happy back-to-school day! Remember to take good care of yourself too by drinking loads of water, eat less heaty food and not falling ill! 8D

Hey percussionists!
Hui Yi here!

Just brooding over band stuffs and decided to blog something.

As you all know, the seniors are gonna step down really soon, and for some seniors it's only 1 more practice for them, which is next week.

So as you all also know, I'm not very well with words, having to pause for long periods of time before actually coming up with anything to say, so yeah, just wanna urge you all to work hard for this concert, and eventually next year's SYF.

We won't be there to guide you all anymore, and I realllly hope you all would put in more effort in sight reading your scores.

I do hope you all can also participate actively in more stuffs, such as going to watch concerts!!!
The percussion tee, after delaying for about a year (sorry my fault..), should be out before our O Levels. HAHAHA.

Just a question, am I hard to approach?? /:
Do come and ask me any questions that you have, be it academics or music, same for all your seniors! I may seem hard to approach, but am actually very very friendly. :D

So to motivate and perhaps interest you all in the upcoming concerts, do look at the following videos to get a feel of the songs that we're going to play.

I'm sure you would've heard the other concert songs before, so I don't think there's a need to post the vids.

You can also just listen to the band and go through the scores on whatever they're going through.

How to give me your t-shirt measurements:

Take your measuring tape and measure a suitable tee from one sleeve (the armpit there) to the other side of the armpit there and give me your measurements in cm.

(it's actually a blue line but it's not clear..)

Please do so when you see this.

Cos the faster you give me your measurements, the faster we can get a tee done.
If I don't get a reply, I'll get you something that I estimate for you, and don't blame me if it's too small / big.

WaterFest

Yo guys! How's band this days? GOD! I'm somehow addicted to band ever since promotion day. Anyway, just wanna ask you all if you are free on the 11 and 12 October. There's a waterfest at marina bay. Just in case you all are hungry for some macho man, let's go together la!

It's been really hard trying to book a chalet and it seems we might not be able to book it unless we abandon Hui Yi and Ting Hui la. Those two kuku have a chalet also on the first of Dec. Don't you all agree that's very kuku? We were even told to change date because of their chalet also. Anyway i'm not gonna be pissed by this la but anyone's got a better idea? Hui Yi suggest we also book at aloha loyang but it also seems that we won't be able to book such an expensive chalet because we wanna pay like around twenty bucks only. That chalet is $250 per night anyway.

SO! If you have any idea for Ting Hui Yi to split their bodies to come for both chalet or book a cheaper chalet, do inform Ting Hui or me!

Tomorrow is promotion day! I know no one is excited but I do hope that all of you turn up because i've heard that some of you won't be turning up. Sad to hear this but tomorrow is not just another promotion day. It's time for us to gather again with our sec fours. You know, I haven't been seeing all the sec 4s for a long time. Don't you miss them? Tomorrow, i'm sure some of us will be crying all over. Don't you all wish we are still by each other, cheering each other up?

I'd like to bring it to all your attention that Michael Phelps had just gotten his 6th medal yesterday at 15 August 2008. Damn! He's is totally godlike. Out of America's current 14 gold, he got 6 together with his swimming partners, that is almost a freaking half of it! I am sure he's gonna reach his target of getting 8 GOLD medals because he is just darn ass amazing.

Although this is not percussion related, I think there is a need to blog anyway.

For all of your latest updates, China is taking the lead with 26 gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze, with a total of 41 medals! OMG.
Next up, America with 14 gold, 13 silver and 19 bronze, a total of 46 medals. 5 more medals than China but obviously lacking of gold.
AND if i'm not wrong, it is only til yesterday did Germany catch up by being in the third place, taking over South Korea with 2 more gold medals, a total of 8 they have. The country Hui Yi just came back from is also not bad. With 6 gold medals, they are at the 6th position. [I like that Taiko drum guy Hui Yi showed me, haha]
Last but not least, Li Jia Wei had just beaten Korea's team in ping pong[LOL] 3-2, yesterday. YAY!

Let's all wish her good luck on her next match with China's team not forgetting to remind yall that this critical match determines whether it's a gold she'll be bringing back. HOLY!

Seriously, Michael Phelps is my fan now la. I even join his fan club on facebook.

Great job people! I enjoyed the performance on Sunday. Everyone was super enthusiastic. Sorry that you all can't take part in the egg relay. I thought it was alright, at least we participated in our own ways. There were some people who registered but didn't even touch the spoon at all.

Hey guys, sorry for being naggy but since nobody's posting, lemme post up some basic reminders for attire. Verbal reminders are sometimes very irritating that's why it's good to be self discipline.

Firstly, I have been reminding alot of yall to tuck in your shirt. After this week, if there are anymore tucked out shirt. Yall shall start being the trend setter by wearing your shirts tucked in until like this:

Hey PEOPLE! Band Comp is over. Though its not what we've expected, but we're real great that day! I'm sure tough we did'nt get that gold with honour, we know that our standard are there.

I'm super proud to be BPMB.

Well band comp is over. Seniors are stepping down too:( . I really cant bear them to leave=(..Tell me where can u get such adorable seniors ?(or have a prom queen for a senior?) hahaa..We've gotta do them proud by concentrating on our studies and get good results.

Hey one and all! EUNICE in the house :D Suprised to see my post here? Well. I just wanted to get some msgs to you guys, thats why i decided to post here! :) heh. Well. I guess that it is important for me to tell you guys some stuffs at this imperative part of the month. Hmm. Well. Not to forget, our Band Comp 2008 is just less than a few hours to go! Feeling the anxiety already? :D:D haha.

Well. We've trained for Uncountable months, Uncountable weeks, Uncountable days and hours for this very Band Comp. Hmm. Just this 7 min or so will determine the results we will get. Hmm. So since we have come this far as a section and most importantly as a band, putting in months, weeks and hours of preparation for this Band Comp, isnt it worth putting in super duper extra power and energy into the 7 mins on the field? Just think about it, we've been training hard for just this 7mins of show. Hmm. ITS DEFINATELY WORTH GIVING IN OUR VERY BEST during this 7mins, dont you think so too? :D heh.

I can guarantee to you that this 7mins of your life will not be forgotten for years to come. Hmm. On the very day, the 7mins is all to us. All eyes will be watching. Till now, although the 06 Band Comp happened 2 years back, the memories of everything is not forgotten though. The sight of people at the grandstand cheering you on, the sound of the commentator and everything will not be forgotten. Trust me, just do your best on that day. As long as we all know we've tried our best, there's nothing for us to regret bout :D right?

Well. After getting to know you guys for bout a year or so, heh :D:D i'm sure we have made great friendships with one another yah. AND. I hope that our friendships and stuffs will not just stop there after Band Comp yah? :D:D hmm. We've also made a couple friends from WSMB, hmm. and seriously, i think we should take this Band Comp as a learning journey, just like what Sir said. Its really important for us to understand, thats its just more than just a competition and everyth (: hmm.

Well. We'd be making our way to the National Stadium soon, and we hafta be prepared to see a couple of bands there as well. Hmm. Just to let you know percussionists, NEVER be tensed or scared and be in awe of them though. Just be confident and just do what we're there for. Really, sometimes mental thinkings really do affect your performances. Hmm. So lets believe in ourselves and do our BEST. So, lets not let anything affect us.

Display Band Competition 2008

12^th April 2008

Hey people, today is the day that we have all been waiting for. Today is the competition day. During the past five months or so, we have been training very hard to achieve what we want. We also went trough many hardships and quarrels as a section together. However, lets leave the past in the past.

We have practised for five months just to perform a perfect eight-minute show. That eight minutes will decide whether we can get a gold with honours medal or a certificate of participation. What ever the results are, we must do our best and muster every single effort out of ourselves.

I know we can do it. I know we can put our best performance up front. I know that we can achieve that award. Do you know how I know that? I know that because throughout the six months we trained, we have improved bit by bit and strengthened our bond. I can see in each and everyone’s eyes the desire to do the best. I believe in you and what is more important is that, you believe in yourself up to this day that you can do it.

I hope that today we will give our best during the performance. I hope that we will give the best show ever. I hope that we will show Tanjong Katong, Deyi and Bowen band what we are made of. Prove to them, prove to the world that Bukit Panjang Military Band is the best and will always be the best. You know what, right now, it does not matter what award we get. As long as we are in this together, I believe that we will achieve it. And guess what, the greatest award that is priceless and even worth it is for me to perform with you, as a section, as a band.

On Friday, 11^th April, there was a S-League soccer match. A band member who was there accidentally bump into his school teacher. Since tomorrow is the SYF display band competition, his teacher brought up the topic of the school band.

Teacher: “I suppose tomorrow’s the day right? Tell me kid, what’s your feeling now?”

Band Member: “Yes Sir, tomorrow’s the day. I feel slightly nervous but most importantly, I feel really honoured and proud to participate in it”

Teacher: “What’s your band aiming for? Another gold perhaps?”

Band Member: “Of course not Sir. We’ll be aiming the best that we can achieve.”

Teacher: “Tell me kid, how best is best?”

Band Member: “Sir, the best can never be describe. The show you’ve seen during our band practices or even sport’s day can never be compare to the show we’re performing tomorrow.”

Teacher: “ I see kid. In that case, are you telling me you wanta win a gold with honours? Hmmm, is it possible? After all why would you be aiming something that you know it’s kinda impossible. There are other bands too kid.”

Band Member: “It’s possible Sir. You haven’t seen us perform our best yet. By all means Sir, Gold with honours doesn’t only apply to the show itself. Us band members have already gotten the award for good teamwork and strong bonding. Furthermore, it doesn’t matter if we get that award or not, what matter most is that us band members are given the chance to perform together and that is even more priceless than a gold with honours. Our sweat, tears and hard work can never be compared.”

Teacher: “You sounded pretty convincing. In fact, what you’ve said is more or less true. However I wanta know if you’re in it to win it. I wanta know if you’re gonna give your best tomorrow. Action speaks louder than words. I wanta see you sweating, performing you best tomorrow.”

Band Member: “I will. Sir, look at that field. A field is a place where us band members strive each day to do our very best, to get our shoes dirty. The field has already tasted the sweat that drop on it every time we practiced. Indeed action speaks louder than words. See me do my very best”

Teacher: “I will. So, kid, now I ask you – are you sure?”

Band Member: “Damn sure that medal is waiting for us Sir. And I promise you tomorrow is the day we catch that medal.”

Today sectional was very intensifying.
However, I realised that I'm the one who is at fault.
I now, sincerely apologizing to this section.

I suppose that the 'blog' thing I wrote was
not a motivation but just another hardcore issue.
I know that those words were too rough and rude.

I have to agree on what Sandy said. She said
something about trust. I think that we need
trust in order to communicate and respect
each other better.

That also reminds me another meaning for TEAM

I also have to agree on what Geok Min said.
She said that it doesn't matter if we get GWH, Gold,
Silver or Bronze. What matter most is the progress
that we enjoy going through together.

And also, just to let you all know, I'm a very hot-tempered person.
Since band competition 2006, my section leader kept on pushing
me despite me being a mere secondary 1 student. I'm a die-hard
person lol. I try to change =)

So that's where I got my strict-roughness
hot-tempered thing lol. Anyway it's over.

Hey yah, the posts have been removed under instructions given by LaiCheng.
I would like to summarize everything said by Hamizan and everyone from the section who has given comment on the tagboard.
Maybe I'm used to monitoring these stuffs on my class blog, so, please don't mind me being extra here yah.

Firstly, Hamizan, we do know you're trying your best, and by scolding us, you're wanting the section to really improve, do our best and go all out for band comp.
By scolding Mandy, your other partner, you are also hoping that she would try to work alongside with you to achieve the perfection of playing the cymbals together. But, to want her to put in all her effort, you have to earn her respect first.

To scold her on the tagboard is simply not an act of respecting her either.

Your harsh words are just enough to make her feel even more angered, she's a girl and just a Sec2 girl. She hasn't got much experiences for such stuffs, hasn't she? At least the rest of us have gone through various public performances and perhaps, less grilling practices.
Be gentle while teaching her. How else would she dare to approach you for help if you're that fierce and not approachable?

Going through this period with a calm mind is seriously what we should be doing. Why have inner conflicts when what we want is the best for the section and nonetheless, the band. We should work towards our goal together and not let this affect our performance for the practices ahead. Like what Wei'en says, inner conflicts are really too much for us to handle now.

And quote from Wei'En as well, blogs are simply too sensitive a venue for us to express such stuffs despite it being true. If you, Hamizan, truly want us to do well, say it openly to us during section talks when everyone is there, even if you're not a SL or ASL, I believe we would listen if you mean everything you say and is going to work as hard as us and of course, encourage and remind us to check our posture, behaviour and attitude when you feel the need to.

No need for harsh words, na-na. Take note of these, it's going out to all of us, the strong-headed percussion section 2008.

Hey people..how ya doing?.. :) Last night i had a dam weird dream. I think cause i'm involved in too many band stuff last night...Hahaa..I dreamt that that faithful day was the Band Comp day...And...i cant really remember much...but my impression of the dream was that Tanjong Katong Won the Best Band Award again. And something like West Spring triump over us..it was a very scary dream that i woke up crying...LOL....i had no idea too. :D

OH yah. Chinese New Year is coming...Was thinking if we could go to someone's house for a visit (or rather play thewhole day?). Any Suggestions? i mean about where to go... give ur ideas at the tagboad and i will finalise them and create a vote-box. And vote for which events for us....BBQ? Kbox? House visit(Mahjong...LOL!)?

Hey if you ppl notice, there's not even a single graduating

percussion senior tagging the blog. Probably becoz of their
O Levels. And if you ppl had listen to wad Hak Soon said
during yesterday's morning assembly, I rmb he said

"O Levels written examinations are starting next monday"

Screw up the part when he said

"All of you [students] are released from 1pm onwards
starting next monday due to O Levels"

So if you people happen to pass by them,
just wish them luck, as many times as you want :)

Band comp practice is coming up real soon
so I guess everybody better be prepared!

Everybody was nervous I guess and
the drum solo was messy????

This is so much better than Singapore Idol and
that lame Live The Dream show!

After that we performed for the skool again.
Bukit Panjang Military Band achieved a Gold Award :)
